New York’s Deadly Skyline update

Last year, the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (NYCOSH) released a report called Deadly Skyline. It was a well-written and targeted document with action items for the industry to stop the trend of construction worker fatalities.

The report has an update for 2018 and can be found here.

Even if you do not work in the state of NY, anyone in the construction industry in of the US can learn something from this report.

Just like last year, the report is very easy to follow, with a summary of findings at the beginning and specific recommendations to follow.

The report is particularly scathing towards contractors who build luxury condos that sell for $10M++ and of OSHA. The report states the truth about OSHA not releasing as many press releases about egregious violators as in past years.

Take a look at the report, use it on your training, post it for workers, and start a conversation. Our industry and our business partners need to do better.

A 78% increase in caps on penalties, but a 7% reduction in average penalty dollars levied? Seriously? I wonder what’s going through those inspectors’ minds when they settle down to such a hiccup of an amount. Is there coercion going on?
